EU MINISTERS BACK ROTTERDAM CONVENTION EXTENSION

THE EUROPEAN Union (EU) Council of Ministers has backed adding chrysotile asbestos, endosulfan and tributyltin compounds to the list of hazardous substances whose international trade is strictly controlled under the UN-brokered Rotterdam Convention. Under this move, importing developing countries would have to give prior approval for such materials to enter their territories. The use of these three materials within the EU is already strictly controlled.
