LAMY THROWS IN THE TOWEL: NO DOHA DEAL IN 2008

WORLD Trade Organisation (WTO) director general Pascal Lamy bowed to
sluggish progress in the Doha Development Round and admitted hopes for a
2008 deal had been dashed. He said in Geneva that because the positions of
member countries had failed to "change dramatically", he would not summon
trade ministers to Geneva for a meeting before Christmas. Lamy said he had
not "detected the political drive" for a final push towards an agreement
which would have especially focused on packaged food. Summoning a WTO second
