CAMPYLOBACTER INFECTIONS TOP LIVESTOCK TO HUMAN DISEASE IN THE EU

THE EUROPEAN Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that in 2007 Campylobacter infections were the most common disease passed onto humans from meat and dairy livestock and food. Britain has a significant problem, having the second highest number of human infections: 57,815 - more than a quarter of all European Union (EU) cases. Only Germany (which has 22 million more people than Britain) had more infections: 66,107. Similarly sized EU countries had much smaller exposures: for instance, France at 3,058; Italy 676; and Spain 5,055.
