THE EUROPEAN Food Safety Agency (EFSA) says a list of potentially allergenic confectionary ingredients within new European Union (EU) labelling legislation (directive 2003/89) is justified by the risk of cereals containing gluten, eggs, peanuts, lactose, other nuts and sesame seeds causing allergic reactions. Named potential allergens must be included in ingredient lists on packaging.
