CAMPYLOBACTER – EFSA

THE EUROPEAN Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has called for the promotion of good hygiene practice (GHP) in the farming of bivalve molluscs, including oysters, to avoid contamination with the pathogen campylobacter. This, it said in a formal study, "can represent a risk to the consumer". It added: "The application of GHP and the control of water quality before harvesting and during depuration are important". The report stressed eating raw or live foods contaminated with campolybacter presented a "considerable" health risk.
