Brussels is to allow the continuation of state aid to the EU's coal industries until at least 2010. At present nine EU members mine coal for the production of electricity, steel and heat, benefiting from a special exemption from regulations banning state aid. This is already scheduled to expire in 2010. After consultations with member countries the European Commission said there was no need the change this arrangement.
