EUROPEAN COMMISSION MANDATES AUTHORISATION SCHEME FOR ACTIVE AND INTELLIGENT PACKAGING

BY KEITH NUTHALL FOOD and drink manufacturers using intelligent and active packaging will have to make sure in future that the materials they incorporate have been approved under a detailed new European Union (EU) authorisation scheme. Such substances that are in contact with food and drink will have to be evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) within six months of an application, with the European Commission having the authority to accept or ban the material.
