EU ADOPTS ANTI SLAPPS DIRECTIVE

The European Union (EU) has approved a directive that will restrict the use of so-called ‘strategic lawsuits against public participation’ (SLAPPs), where rich individuals use legal cases to silence critics or prevent journalists investigating wrongdoing. Once the directive is published in the EU’s Official Journal in the coming days, EU member states will have two years to apply the rules.
