EFSA SAYS EXISTING CHICKEN STUNNING SYSTEMS MAY NOT WORK

A EUROPEAN Food Safety Authority (EFSA) study has warned that existing chicken stunning equipment may not be sufficiently strong to protect birds from suffering when they are slaughtered, and has called for the development of more effective systems.The review of new scientific data on some existing equipment meeting European Union (EU) technical standards under EU regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 concluded some “birds were not rendered immediately unconscious by the intervention”.
